Memories, collecting and escapism suggest other sentiments and ideas of loss, nostalgia, reflection, humor, tenderness, loneliness and fragility. My work navigates through these concepts sometimes treading lightly, other times sinking in and searching thoroughly. I am interested in taking familiar objects out of the context they normally exist in and transforming them. I like to imagine their existence before I obtained them and how they may or may not function now…what their limitations are. Drawing and painting the objects allows me to explore endless possibilities. I am intrigued with the physical qualities of the materials I use; observing the difference between the marks made by various pencils is a worthwhile experience. It seems overly romantic to think of these objects as having a past, and that somehow I can affect their present by altering the way they look, but being aware of this does not deter me. The little bits of paint left behind serve as kind of a clue, telling us these objects are not just white, that something has happened to them. The subjects and objects I’m working with have existed in some form before they became part of my anthology, and they will continue to exist with or without my influence. That idea, of these things always being somehow a part of the world has and will continue to challenge me with finding ways of transforming their associations and meaning.
