This recent body of work combines gestural paint application with the precise color placement of an illusionist painter. Each work starts with a vigorous distribution of plain white gesso to the panel. The surfaces I construct display control, but still allow nature to play its role. Subtracting the color from the develpment of the texture allows me to focus strictly on the mark making. Once the surface is dry, I introduce color through a series of washes and wiping.  The wiping reveals the topography and allows me to investigate what has physically occurred.  The physical characteristics of the texture, through the rapid events that took place, become my subject matter.
